My name is Ray and I am a new guy around Kosir’s this year. A lot of you know me from when I did the pictures and videos here for something like 15 years. This year I am moving up and joining the crew in the rafting office. I have been running the Silvercliff.com/NorthernDestinations.com and the BigSnowPage.com blogs for almost 20 years, so they put me in charge of blogging here too.
It is a busy time around the rafting office trying to get everything organized for the spring whitewater rafting season on the Peshtigo River. At the moment we are in the middle of a snowstorm, our second this week. The first one brought almost 9” and this one is expected to bring about the same.
Between the snow coming down and an abnormally cold week we have decided to delay our opening weekend by a week. The Peshtigo River was mostly open earlier this week with only a few spots that were frozen tight. The return of winter has put a lid on that, the past few nights have been under 10 degrees F. At that point it is very likely that the river won’t be ready Saturday.
Rather than have people travel up here only to be disappointed we are pushing our opening weekend back to Saturday April 14th. We will still be honoring our opening weekend Icebreaker Special, where you get to run both the morning and afternoon trips for the price of one trip.
I recall one year that we had a huge crew up here for opening weekend and we had a big snowstorm Friday night. We had everything ready to go and an enthusiastic group of people totally pumped about rafting the next day.
Saturday morning we woke up and the river was frozen tight. The snow had slushed up the water, and the cold night made it solid ice. We had a great time Friday night, but got skunked Saturday when we wanted to paddle.
We don’t want to have people disappointed and safety is our top priority, so we made the call to cancel this weekend.
One of the things that we are working on right now is our new on-line reservation system. It has a lot of great features, but there are a few bugs to work out before it is 100% awesome. A hot tip from your buddy Ray… You can save the 6% fee from the reservation system by calling the office directly. The reservation system also does not give you the special deals like the Two Rivers Special or Ice Breaker Special. You need to call us directly to get the deals.
Also don’t forget that coming up April 20-22 is Pesh Fest. There will be all kinds of deals, food, kayak races and lots of people that came to have a good time. You will be hearing a lot more about that here and in other places on the Kosir’s web site.
I have to run, but I have plans to be back here blogging a couple of times a week. Thank you for visiting and we hope to see you soon!
